Winter 2011/12 Story Ideas & What's New

This summer, Copper Mountain Resort invested over $15 Million in our operations. Two of the bigger projects include:

The new Union Creek High Speed Quad, replacing the High Point Lift that faithfully served Copper since 1976. The new lift will provide improved service to all levels of skiing and riding ability. The lift, manufactured by Doppelmayr USA, will have a new alignment to help improve skier and rider circulation in and out of Union Creek. In conjunction with the new lift, the addition of a new trail connection from the east will make the circulation from the Catalyst Terrain Park and the tremendous beginner and intermediate terrain in the area, much easier.

  • A complete re-grade of the Union Creek base area will provide more and better teaching terrain for the Copper Ski and Ride School.
  • The Union Creek Café has a new outdoor seating area that gets plenty of sunshine for those warmer spring days.

Also new this season, Copper entered into a new partnership with the U.S. Ski Team (USSA) to build a full length, early season (November through mid-December) speed training center in the Super Bee area of East Village. The U.S. Ski Team Speed Center at Copper is a one-of-a-kind training venue, featuring a new top to bottom automated snowmaking system and all the safety, communications and timing equipment necessary to provide a consistent snow surface for our national team. The biggest game changer about this venue is that it is the only full-length downhill speed training course in the world at this time of year.

Speed Center Stats

  • Vertical rise: About 2,300 vertical feet
  • Linear feet:  9,500 – 9,800 linear feet (just short of 2 miles of trail)
  • Volume of snow/water:  ~11 million gallons of water will be used to make snow
  • Venue Acreage: ~44 acres
  • 87 new automatic snowmaking guns
  • ~20,000 feet of new Fencing (A & B Netting)
  • ~12,000 feet of new power cables and ~16,000 feet of new communication cables

A few more NEW things to keep an eye out for this season:

A Quickie – a new Ski and Ride School lesson, the Quickie is a 50-minute, semi-private lesson, with a max of 3 guests for every 1 pro coach. Consider the Quickie a fast learning experience for adults only. In this lesson, take advantage of a 5-minute lift ride on the new Union Creek High Speed Quad Lift, as these lessons run only when West Village (formerly Union Creek) is open. Get a quick tune-up with the Quickie - a great way to learn faster than in the past.  In addition, your friendly Ski & Ride School staff will be decked out in new Spyder Gear this season.

A new Demo Center, called “Copper Rocker,” featuring the newest and best Rocker Ski Technology. Rocker technology lifts the tips of the ski out of the snow for a more balanced position – great in both powder conditions and all-mountain fun.  If you haven’t tried this technology yet, we highly recommend heading over to Copper Rocker (located slopeside next to Endo’s Adrenaline Café) and trying it for yourself.

A new Spyder Concept Store (also slopeside next to Endo’s) carrying Men’s, Women’s and Youth Skiwear, Casualwear and Accessories. For 30 years, Spyder has focused on every detail in engineering superior skiwear scrutinizing the subtleties that make every discipline and every athlete unique. Spyder is renowned for integrating high-tech fabrics, fashion and functionality.

Four new Snow Cats added to Copper’s fleet, along with a new “Sherpa” transporter to assist beginner skiers and riders traveling between Center Village and our learning areas.
