A criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 5 km) often conducted on closed-off city center streets, in this case, the Village at Copper. Criteriums are generally shorter than a traditional road race, though the average speed and intensity are usually higher. Success in criteriums requires a mix of good technical skills, in particular the ability to corner rapidly and sharply. This short course, classic "hard man" criterium will wind its way through the Village at Copper on Saturday, Sept. 12, challenging riders with road descents, village pavers and uphill straight-aways.
Not a racer? Not a problem! The Recreation path in Summit County is a gem, as it spans from Copper to Frisco, Breck, Dillon and Keystone. For the weekend Fall Colors Poker Ride there will be five aid stations set up, one in each of these locations. At each aid station, participants will get another playing card. Later that evening at the Fall Colors BBQ, riders can parlay their hands into a winner – there are tons of prizes including season passes to Copper, weekend stays at the resort and tons of bike gear.
Sunday, Sept. 13 at Copper hosts USA Cycling Time Trial (TT) state championships. The Time Trial is the old course used years ago by Maverick Sports Promotions during their well-received Summer Time Trial Series. Riders will depart from Copper's Burning Stones Plaza in 30-second intervals, and from there they will wind their way up Summit County's Recreation path to the finish at the top of Vail Pass. State Champion designations will be awarded for all listed categories and Colorado residency is not required for these time trials.
