Guitar legends convene at Copper Mountain July 29-30 for Guitar Town, a weekend of top-notch entertainment celebrating that much-loved instrument. From shred to twang, Les Paul to Telecaster, fans can sit on the hillside and enjoy two days of free live performances by some of the world’s finest guitarists including the legendary Joe Satriani and venerable Tim Reynolds.
After a morning exploring Copper and its surrounding areas, guests can return to Copper Base Camp and refuel with great live music. The performances get underway each day at noon and continue until approximately 7:00 p.m. Also on tap are the Guitar Town Celebrity Guitar Auction and Jam, Hands on a Hard Body competition, the Guitars On Fire amateur talent competition, instrument sales, guitar expos, food vendors and more.
Saturday’s line up is highlighted by Tim Reynolds who makes use of every capacity the guitar possesses. Known for his eclectic style, from progressive rock, straight-up jazz and high-powered funk-fusion to bass, piano, sitar, mandolin, violin and a plethora of ethnic percussion instruments, his musical ability is truly wide-ranging. When this self-taught musician performs it is a symphony of the senses. Also performing Saturday are John Jorgenson Gypsy Jazz, Tommy Emmanuel, Laurence Juber, La Vienta, Mark Selby and Scott Goldman.
Sunday brings the legendary “Satch” to Copper’s main stage. Joe Satriani is recognized as one of the most technically proficient guitarists in rock. He has mastered nearly every performance technique on the instrument, including two-handed tapping, sweep picking, volume swells, harmonics, and extreme whammy bar effects. Satriani has received 13 Grammy® nominations, and has sold more than 7 million albums worldwide. Joining Satriani on Sunday are the John Jorgenson Electric Group, Joe Bonamassa, Sonny Landreth, and Mark Selby.
Copper’s Guitars On Fire amateur talent competition, sponsored by Guitar Center, gives one talented guitarist the chance to take their passion for music to the next level. To find the best guitar talent in Colorado guitar experts pare down contestants during preliminary live auditions held in mid-July at Denver’s Jackson’s All American Sports Grill, 1520 20th St. Judging is based on talent and the ability to capture the audience while vocal skills are not judged. Finalists will play on the Guitar Town main stage where the winner is chosen by audience approval and awarded a trip for two to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Registration is $20 at any Denver or Colorado Springs Guitar Center location. Contestants must be 18 years or older.
Amidst all the live music is the Hands on a Hard Body competition where contestants must continuously touch the body of a Ford truck. At stake is a brand new, hard-body, 2006 Ford Ranger from Lakewood Fordland. Beginning Friday, July 28 at 8:00 a.m., contestants commit to the long-haul and are not allowed to sit, squat, lean or prop themselves up in any way. Registration is $10 and can be completed at Lakewood Fordland, 11000 West Colfax Ave. or at www.lakewoodford.com.
Those interested in taking home a piece of Guitar Town have a chance to bid on autographed guitars and memorabilia during the Celebrity Guitar Auction and Jam on Saturday, July 29 at 7:30 p.m. at McGillycuddy’s Irish Pub next to West Lake. The auction includes items signed by Eric Clapton, Kenny Rogers, Eric Johnson, Wyclef Jean, Rusted Root and more. Proceeds benefit the Summit Foundation and Music Rising, an instrument replacement fund for musicians of the Gulf Coast. More information is available at www.musicrising.org.
