Celebrate the Best Conditions of the New Year at Copper during MLK Weekend, Jan. 18-20

With over 2 feet of new snow in the new year so far and more in the forecast, 2014 is shaping up to be happy indeed at Copper Mountain. Martin Luther King weekend is the perfect time to check out the best conditions of the year, during Copper’s WinterBike and Safety Fest, January 18 - 20.

COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. — January 9, 2014 – With over 2 feet of new snow in the new year so far and more in the forecast, 2014 is shaping up to be happy indeed at Copper Mountain. Martin Luther King weekend is the perfect time to check out the best conditions of the year, during Copper’s WinterBike and Safety Fest, January 18 - 20.         

  

Who said you can’t mountain bike during the winter months; break out the bikes for the 3rd Annual WinterBike on Saturday, Jan. 18. Kicking off at 6 p.m. in Center Village, this one of a kind race brings mountain bikers screaming around the resort and on the mountain for a 10 mile race through snowy obstacles followed by a grand finish line hoorah complete with a fireworks show in Burning Stones Plaza beginning at 7 p.m. The race is the first in the Leadville Winter Mountain Bike Series and cost for entry is $20 per rider. All proceeds from the race goes towards Cloud City Wheelers advocacy efforts. Make it a family affair with Little Bike, this free kids-only fun ride at 5 p.m. for kids 11 and under. Registration is available day-of only in West Lake Overlook from 4 - 5:45 p.m. Bike rentals for the race are available. Check out what winter bike riding is all about with “fat” bike demos provided by  Borealis, Boo Bikes, Reeb, Wilderness Sports and Rebel Sports available all day Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 18 – 19.


January is National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) National Safety Awareness Month. To celebrate, Copper Mountain’s Safety Fest takes over Burning Stones Plaza in Center Village over Martin Luther King weekend, Jan. 18 - 20. National Ski Patrol, the U.S. Forest Service, Summit County Rescue Group, Woodward at Copper and many more will be on hand to provide information on backcountry awareness, National Forest access and Copper Mountain’s Safety Initiatives. Prize drawings will be held daily at 1:30 p.m.; including Copper Mountain lodging packages, a private Tucker Mountain snowcat trip and a 2014/2015 Copper Mountain Season Pass.

 

Safety Fest will feature daily avalanche dog demonstrations in Burning Stones Plaza at 11 a.m. and Copper’s West Village at 12:30 p.m. Flight for Life helicopter will land at Patrol Headquarters, located above Excelerator Lift on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 10 a.m. Patrol Headquarters and Timberline Patrol Hut will host an open house with free hot cocoa throughout the weekend and the remainder of the month of January. Guests are also invited to sign up and shadow Copper’s Ski Patrol in daily sweeps to close the mountain at 4 p.m. For more information, including a full event schedule, please visit CopperColorado.com .
