Summer Wildlife: Birds
More than 100 birds have been identified at Copper Mountain during the summer season. Here are a some of the most common.
Robin
Usually the first to be seen in spring. They live at all elevations, from the valley floor to the subalpine forest at timberline.
Common Flicker
A woodpecker with orange underwings.
Red Winged Blackbird
Often seen in the bushes along the golf course.
Mountain Chickadee
Small gray, black and white bird - has a black eye stripe. They like to hang out in small flocks. Its call is a "chick-a-dee-dee-dee". They usually flock between the Mighty Mite and Pooh Corner.
Mountain Bluebird
Small, brilliant blue. Copper has installed many bluebird boxes around the resort to encourage nesting.
White Crowned Sparrow
Usually seen on the alpine tundra.
Blue Grouse
Although another grouse, this one does not turn white in winter. It stays a mottled gray-brown. They enjoy buds and needles of conifers in the subalpine forest.
Dipper
Little gray bird-lives along streams- actually feeds on the stream bottom.
Red Tailed Hawk
Most common of the hawks at Copper.
Golden Hawk
Very rare, but when seen is usually soaring very high over the mountain.
Raven
Solid black, larger than a crow. It likes to ride the air currents up high. Usually seen in pairs-they mate for life. Chortles, cackles and caws are among the many sounds this intelligent bird can make. Likes to perch on the treetops. Look there first if you hear one. It's also a scavenger.
